Dead Stock
Inventory that is not selling and is unlikely to sell at full price.
Definition
Dead stock (also called deadstock or obsolete inventory) is merchandise that has sat in inventory for an extended period with no sales velocity. It ties up capital and incurs ongoing storage costs.
Why It Matters for Shopify Brands
Dead stock is a silent margin killer. Identifying and liquidating dead stock — through bundles, discounts, donations, or disposal — frees up capital and storage for better-performing SKUs.
Benchmarks
Inventory with zero sales in 90+ days should be flagged as slow-moving. At 180+ days with no sales, evaluate aggressive liquidation.
