Shopify Ops Glossary

Backorder

An order placed for a product that is temporarily out of stock.

Definition

A backorder is an order accepted when inventory is unavailable, with a commitment to fulfill when stock is replenished. Backorder management requires clear communication about expected timelines and fulfillment status.

Why It Matters for Shopify Brands

Poorly managed backorders generate anxiety tickets, cancellation requests, and chargebacks. Proactive communication — with accurate ETAs and regular updates — dramatically reduces backorder-related support volume.

Benchmarks

Backorder conversion to fulfillment: 60–75% is typical. Above 85% indicates strong backorder communication. Below 50% suggests ETAs are too optimistic or communication is too infrequent.
